Install Your Own Artificial Grass

1. MANAGE YOUR MATERIALS

Firstly, work out the materials that you will need to install your artificial turf. These will include geotextile weed killer, a turf cutter, a Stanley knife and accessories, such as tape and glue.

2. ASSESS HEIGHT, WIDTH & LENGTH

Work out the height, width and length of the area that the artificial grass will fill and ensure that the area in which you wish to work is clear.

3. REMOVE THE EXISTING SURFACE

This can be done by hand if it is a relatively small area being fitted with artificial grass. For larger areas, use a turf cutter.

However, it must be taken into account to never build your base on top soil!

4. COMPACT THE GROUND

Confidently compact the ground by using a vibrating plate or roller. These can usually be hired from equipment hire centers for inexpensive prices.

5. PREVENT ANY WEEDS

Once your base his been compacted, add a weed killing membrane on the area to be covered with fake grass. This will not only reduce the likeliness of weeds growing through the artificial grass but will also allow vital drainage.

6. LAY YOUR SAND OR STONE BASE

Place down a minimum of 40mm of sharp and compacted sand or stone. If the sand is too dry, add a little wet sand and compact using your vibrating plate or roller.

7. LAY YOUR SAND OR STONE BASE

Should you desire to use timber or other edging, place this down now. Ensure that edging is not higher than the final grass line, to allow the water to run-off the turf.

8. ROLL OUT YOUR GRASS

Carefully roll out your artificial grass, being careful to not disturb the weed killing membrane as this will damage the leveling work on the base layer. Remember, your grass has a directional pile, so it will all need to face the same way if you have any joins.

We recommend laying the grass with the pile leaning towards your house or main area so that it looks more natural.

9. LET THE GRASS SETTLE

It is advisable to now let your fake grass settle for a minimum of three hours and if possible, overnight. This will stop the grass from wrinkling or creasing.

10. CUT & TRIM THE EDGES

After the settling process is complete, cut and trim the artificial grass, using a sharp Stanley knife, ensuring the grass is cut neatly around the edges.

11. JOIN THE GRASS TOGETHER

In order to compose the joins of your grass, use a high-quality outdoor tape and glue, following the instructions on the products. Lay the tape and apply the adhesive, before pulling the grass edges together and applying some weight to them. This can be achieved with plant pots, stones or other heavy materials..

12. PIN IT DOWN

When fitting our artificial turf, pin it down using landscaping pins. Should you be using a timber frame, you will need to utilise flat-headed galvanised nails.

13. BRUSH THE GRASS UP AND RELAX

Finally, the fiber may be relatively flat from being rolled up, so be sure to brush against the pile to bring the fibers of the artificial grass upright. Then sit back and enjoy your artificial grass lawn!

Supply Questions

How Much Synthetic Turf Do I Need?

When your area is suitably prepared for the installation of your artificial grass (excavated to the correct level, cracker dust applied and compacted), you will need to determine how much artificial grass you will need.

Consider also the direction in which you will lay the artificial grass, as the blades are directional and will look different when viewed from different angles.

Therefore, you will need to lay all lengths the same way.

Additionally, as the artificial grass looks more natural-looking into the head of the blades, consider the direction from which it is most important for the artificial grass to look it’s best.

Measuring Your Area

Measuring out your area for artificial grass is not the same as measuring for the amount of cracker dust you needed, as the cracker dust is loose-fill and your artificial grass comes from a fixed width roll.

Unless your area is a perfect rectangle that is the same width as the artificial grass roll, there will be wastage, and you will need to factor the wastage into your measurements, as well as considering the width of the artificial turf roll and the direction of the grass.

If your area has curves, you will need to square off your synthetic grass measurements.

Sometimes it is possible to alter other elements in your landscape to make your area for your synthetic grass more cost-effective. For example, if your area is 4.2metres wide, you might be able to extend a garden bed so the area is only 4metres wide, therefore making the area the same width as your roll of artificial grass.

If it all proves a little too tricky, or you just want someone to double-check your measurements, you can always request that a friendly Buy Lawn Direct representative to come out to help you measure.

How To Measure A Rectangle Or Square Lawn

If you have a rectangle or square lawn, congratulations! You are one of the lucky ones and measuring it is fairly simple. You will need to measure the length and width of the rectangle or square in meters to calculate an estimate of the amount of artificial grass required. Once you know the length and the width you simply multiply the two together.

For example:
Length = 8m. Width = 4m.
8m x 4m = 32m2.

How To Measure A Circle Lawn

The best way to get an estimate on how much fake grass you will need to cover a circle lawn is to measure the diameter of the area in metres. Once the diameter is known, multiply it by 0.80 then times it by the diameter again.

For example:
Diameter = 16m
16m x 0.80 = 12.8
12.8 x 16m = 204.8m2

How To Measure An Oval Lawn

To calculate how much artificial grass you will need to cover an oval lawn, measure the length and width in metres, then multiply the length by 0.80 before multiplying it by the width.

For example:
Length = 9m. Width = 15m.
9m x 0.80 x 15m = 108m2

How To Measure A Triangle Lawn

To work out how much synthetic grass you will need to cover a triangle-shaped lawn, measure the base and height of the area in meters, then multiply the base by 0.50 before multiplying that by the height.

For example.
Base = 18m. Height = 12m.
18 x 0.50 x 12 = 108m2
